Per the server license I can have up to 2 Windows Virtual machines per set of licenses that cover my cores. I have core processors and I purchased a 16 core license.

If I understand correctly this allows me to run an unlimited number of non-Windows virtual machines 3rd party licenses apply when relevant and I am allowed to run 2 Windows Virtual Machines. Am I able to run two virtual instances of Window Server Standard as well as the host instance without purchasing additional licenses? So essentially I am able to run the host, a virtual machine as an ADDC Windows Active Directory Domain Controller and a virtual machine as a database server with my single 16 core license as long as they are all on the same physical server?

No, not unlimited. Standard Edition provides rights for up to 2 Operating System Environments no matter the OS or Windows Servers containers with Hyper-V isolation when all physical cores in the server are licensed. For each additional 1 or 2 VMs, all the physical cores in the server must be licensed again. If you want unlimited virtual operating system environments you’ll need a DataCenter license.

Regards, Dave Patrick I know we are getting into the legal interpretation here, but I had never heard it said that the limitation was by ‘no matter the OS’. The reason is that Microsoft controls the licensing for Windows Server, not for other server operating system environments.

I know, the disclaimer at the beginning says to talk with a licensing specialist, but I know that much of the content of this blog was vetted by Microsoft. Windows Server Standard i. Note what I have highlighted in bold. The same phrase is used for the operating system at the physical level as is used for the virtual level. I have always interpreted that to mean Microsoft is granting the right to run its server operating systems. It cannot legally enforce any sort of rights to run any other server operating systems.

Bottom line is that this is a prime example of why one needs to contact a trained Microsoft licensing specialist. I have almost 25 years of working with Microsoft as a partner and employee. During that time I had to deal with licensing questions over and over, and I attended various licensing classes.

In most customer cases, I would contact a licensing specialist. In those cases where I didn’t, I qualified my answer to say that I was not an authority. So though I believe my interpretation is based on conversations with Microsoft licensing specialists, I will not claim the above is authoritative.

Contact a trained Microsoft licensing specialist for any licensing interpretation. Standard edition is licensed for 2 operating system environments. Agreed, the OP could ask their reseller’s trained specialist or microsoft licensing support for legal interpretations, but probably is moot point given what the OP wants to do. Please remember to mark the replies as answers if they help. If you have feedback for TechNet Subscriber Support, contact tnmff microsoft.

All, While can’t really state a single response as being the answer they were all helpful and I appreciate that. I went the route of Data Center so this no longer an issue.

Standard Edition provides rights for up to 2 Operating System Environments no matter the OS ” I know we are getting into the legal interpretation here, but I had never heard it said that the limitation was by ‘no matter the OS’.

Saturday, March 16, PM. Standard edition is licensed for 2 operating system environments and I took that as meaning other OSs like linux or similar would count as consuming an operating system environment, nothing to do with licensing those products but just windows hypervisor rights.
