I have a problem with updating a virtual machine from Windows server r2 datacenter to Windows server r2 datacenter. The machine was with Windows server r2 and the upgrade to Windows server r2 datacenter was successful, after that I have pached the machine to r2 SP1 and install all the updates.

Everything is working correct and users can use the server, but now I have to upgrade it to R2. The upgrade starts and everything is normal, until the restart. I have tried several things: to change the controller, to shutdown the machine and power it on again, to rebuild the boot, nothing helps. I tried with mounting the ISO with r2 and then when I fix the boot the old windows boots without a problem and I get that there was something wrong and the system is not upgraded.

First I used gptgen Then I try to exit the cmd and I got the option to use again Windows R2. After everything I gave windows one last try to upgrade to Windows R2 and I could not believe it after the restart I got a screen with text Upgrading Windows instead of an error.

Any reason you are trying to do an inplace upgrade instead of just spinning up a new server and migrating services? Yes, the reason is that this a test machine for our QA department and they say that they do not have time to migrate all their stuff. Also we want to add the machine to our domain, but we do not want to add a machine with Windows server R2.

So they have been using this server since Server and now they suddenly don’t have time to migrate, I call BS. What is the disk that is having issue being read?

Is there enough space on the VM to accomplish the upgrade, system partition? Most installations were 32 bit. There is no 32 bit version of R2 or R2, which is why I am asking. If the current OS is 32 bit, there is no way to upgrade that. I call that BS too I just say they do not want to have to do a cleanup. I would let that thing fail, set a new server, sorry guys When I write winver in cmd the pop up window shows the version.

The first operation system was Windows Server bit. Yes, no programs are running when I start the upgrade. Spiceworks for example tends to lock itself Had that issue once. Try to close all except the windows server ones as far as possible. Technically it ran, but it was so far from the current specs, it was quite useless.

I just wanted a laptop with a browser to attend job-searchers meetings. Any click would cause it to pause for minutes. A boat anchor was more useful. Anyhow, what you didn’t mention is any details about your vmware environment. I’m wondering mostly what vmware hardware version the virtual is and what the story is for the version of vmware tools you are running.

I keep my vm’s up to the latest vmware hardware version that ESXi 6. It just can not do the final setup after the restart, because it can not boot from the VM hard disk. It just stays on the black screen with the error message. I will give up for today, maybe tomorrow I will think of something else or someone will have a new idea :. The VMWare tools running on the machines are version this is the current version for Server R2.

And the compatibility is ESXi 6. I think that this server was not converted it was installed on one ESXi and the transferred to the current one. I wonder if your your snapshot is interfering or competing with Windows doing the in-place upgrade? Have you tried taking a backup and doing the upgrade without vmware taking a snapshot.

I’d also shift to working on the console instead of a remote desktop connection so you avoid network connections being dropped such as what happens when vmware tools updates. I’m with others in saying QA is making their problem IT’s problem.

Clearly their logic is “It worked before, and could again, let’s try it! Maybe you have just found that the hard drive is corrupt, hardware is broken or something “virtual”. What is on this machine that belongs to QA that can span such a long period of time and still get IT to still accept it in your environment? The oldest stuff is company applications that were legacy, now are ancient legacy, but are fundamentally Microsoft classic asp, so most of the tweaks we had to make were about figuring out what setting in IIS had changed so it wasn’t too painful.

Time for me to go through that again. The last instances of that old stuff still hasn’t died dead yet. I also eventually picked up on the need to install the IIS 6. It might be enlightening to look through the panther setupact. You may get lucky and see an error, but at the very least you would know which part of the reboot cycle this is occuring in and be able to target efforts from there.

Also potentially useful would be to turn on boot logging and investigate the cause of failure there after a repair operation. The first time I upgrade the machine without snapshot I tough that nothing could happen and the result was the same. On the machine is a test web site and a base nothing so special from my point of view, but this is the IT point the QA is OO we have an important thing and we have a lot of work, I will try some other things and if they do not work I will say sorry everything is lost :D.

I can not see the log or anything it just stays in black screen with the error and nothing. The first time that I have fixed the boot and boot the Windows server r2 I only got message that the upgrade failed and I could not find any logs.
