Find The Device Slowing Down Your Network.


Its been a while since I have tried diagnosing networking issues so I am hoping someone can shed some light on what I need to do with this issue. My problem is every once in a while we get a slowness on our network and I have no idea where it comes from. I used to be able to go right to the server room or other closets and see the switch lights all blinking at one time. Which usually told me some type of broadcast storm was going on and we had a device on the network flooding the network.

And then you could unplug cables one a time and find out where this issue was coming from. However I believe this issue only occurs when someone gets to work and turns their computer on and starts working. Unless I have an issue with just zoom calls not going through the firewall correctly. We use a sonicwall for a firewall. From the firewall it goes to a router which splits up the comcast bandwidth to two other networks that are connected to it. We have mbps up and down. Speed tests are coming out to about mbps every time.

The other two networks have no lag at all, its just this one network behind the sonicwall that is struggling to do conferences and seems to have bandwidth issues. The only change we have done is installed sophos as a endpoint client. I am looking into seeing if this maybe slowing peoples connections down also and making zoom calls difficult, but I would think this has no impact as the same devices on the other network work just fine on the other network when connected – its only noticed that zoom calls lag when on this one network.

So this narrows it down to there being something on the network behind my sonicwall causing the issue or my sonicwall filtering traffic in a manor where it is slowing things down. Looking for all ideas and techniques I can do to see whats on my network and how to isolate where all these packets maybe coming from or bottle necking somewhere. I have done ping tests during the times when people complained about their zoom calls and ping tests are just fine.

I did not see nothing out of the normal of just a ms lag while users are heavy on the network. If one is slow and the others are not – then I would investigate the connection from the slow network to the ISP router – what is different about this – another device? Otherwise one flat network of devices should not be an issue for the firewall and isp link. A diagram of the different switches and connections would be useful – if you are having broadcast storms etc it is worth checking that these are all connected correctly oer in the best way.

You should try adding a policy that does no filtering to the domains used by Zoom so that there is no chance of traffic getting slowed down by filtering. Are there any other physical differences in HOW the Zoom devices connect, e. I’d start first with an unrestricted packet filter to Zoom domains.

How I found that was by testing on my pc. I opened up wireshark and watched all these packets going across my network. At first I thought it had something to do with the sophos firewall. So I uninstalled that. Then noticed in my wireshark that every time it lagged my computer was trying to send more packets across the network or another server was trying to access my pc. So I stopped all applications that was sending packets and cut out all connections coming into my pc.

Then I was left with seeing all udp packets coming and going into my pc. I was at a lost until I saw broadcast packets from the sonicwall and decided to investigate some more. I quickly googled udp zoom packets and sonicwall. The first link I got was what I needed. It explained the UPD flood protection and what was needed to be done. I was able to see via wireshark that on average udp packets are transffered per second. All has been working much better now. My thought is that the sonicwall is deep packet inspecting and slowing things down. I even went to stream a youtube video yesterday and it lagged. My thoughts is that something keeps taking up the bandwidth on the network or every so often something keeps slowing the traffic down. I am starting to notice its not just zoom traffic now. Streaming a video on youtube will run fine at times and then it will just lag in the middle. Its like we have way to many connections on the subnet or something.

The best analogy I can give, is its like being on the neighborhood internet and when it snows and everyone is home and on the internet for that day it lags at random all day long as people are doing things. My thought is that it has to be something in the sonicwall, or we have a failing device on the network that is creating a bottleneck I find this option a little less likely or I have a device that is broadcasting to much on the network which I thought maybe this new product sophos we are using might be doing that.

What makes me think its not the sophos is that my ip phone started cutting in and out also – so that makes me know that it is something on the network causing latency, especially when it has never done that before, unless the sophos is sending more packets across our network causing latency issues. We are a large office of about employees across 6 offices. During this time we have some users working from home and some working from the offices. All 6 offices are connected through a direct network connection through Cox, and all internet access is routed from our main office.

When we do zoom meetings, the people at home are fine while the people that are connected in the office have a terrible experience. They get messages that say network is unstable, they freeze and have issues with audio cutting in and out.

There are typically only about internal users and about 7 -8 external users. Obviously it is an internal network issue, but I can’t figure out what that issue is. Looking at the switches they are all connected via ethernet and not wifi the bandwidth usage is relatively low.

There isn’t any dropped packets or high cpu utilization on the switch. The internet bandwidth is also pretty low, It is about 20 Mbps down and about 3 Mbps up and we have a Mbps up and down connection. Can anyone please point me in a direction to look? Even though CPU usage for the switch or firewall may not be high, your total bandwith is being shared for all uses, you may need to set a certain QoS level for Zoom in order for everyone to have a pleasant experience.

I haven’t looked at QoS settings yet. But I would think, since total bandwidth isn’t maxing out, or getting close to anything, that it wouldn’t be an issue.

But I will look at that now. I’d look at those numbers. We see about 3mbps up per connected user. Is your firewall throttling user bandwidth? Had my Xfinity internet checked and I am OK.

Is there a workaround for this? I am just joining meetings, Not the host. My problem was resolved. My internet provider also checked and said everything was ok. I persisted and one of the tech guys went through and did a whole lot of resets etc, just stabbing in the dark – nothing changed.
